Exclusion from mainstream financial institutions such as credit unions and banks is common place for many members of our community.Travellers have particular difficulties in accessing and using financial services such as basic banking facilities, credit, savings and insurance services. This is often referred to as financial exclusion.
As a Traveller dedicated organisation, we have undertaken comprehensive work on the causes of financial exclusion, and have made recommendations thorough various reports and submissions.
We welcome the government’s Strategy for Financial inclusion. The Strategy was developed following the restructuring of Bank of Ireland, when the State made a commitment to undertake a review of the options available to achieve financial inclusion in Ireland.
National Traveller MABS will continue to work with the Traveller Community and policy makers to highlight on-going issues surrounding financial exclusion and advocate for a fully inclusive financial services system.
