Traveller Woman Embarks on Her Dream
On the 8th November 2012, Traveller woman Margaret McDonagh officially opened her new dress making business O'Brien's Fine Designs in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
O'Brien's Fine Designs provides fairytale occasion wear for weddings, communions and christenings. Margaret is a highly skilled dressmaker, and is happy to design and make dresses to suit the requirement of each and every client. Margaret has many years’ experience in enterprise from selling in markets with her father from an early age and later as an adult on The Hill in Dublin's North Inner City. Margaret believes that selling comes naturally to Travellers.
Local councilor, Dennis O'Callaghan, officially opened Margaret's shop. It was clear from the presence of people from local businesses, and services such as Dun Laoghaire MABS and the Southside Partnership that Margaret is warmly welcomed and highly regarded as she embarks on this new venture.
In 2011, Margaret completed entrepreneur training developed by a US based social lending agency called Entrepreneurs4Change. The training was brought to Ireland by National Traveller MABS in partnership with The Dublin Simon Community, South Inner City Community Development Network (SICCDA) and South West Wexford CDP (SWWCDP). Margaret also received support from the local enterprise board which enabled her to make her dream a reality.
