 Gas Pre-Payment Meters

This notice is for people with gas pre-payment meters supplied by an energy supplier (not by the council)

Energy providers have advised people to continue to top up meters where possible. Gas meters can only be topped up in a post office or shop.

Due to Covid-19, some customers will not be able to go to a post office or shop to top up, buy credit, or vend.

If your gas is supplied by an energy company (and not by the council)

There has been an increase in the amount of emergency credit for gas prepayment customers from €10 to €100. This will not happen automatically. You have to follow the directions below.

This is so that people can stay connected to gas if they cannot purchase credit or topup regularly.

This credit will have to be paid back at a later date, so only use this in an emergency.

What to do to access emergency gas credit on a gas prepayment meter:

  • You must bring the gas pre-payment card to a post office or shop and complete a vend
  • The emergency credit cannot be applied if you do not complete this vend
  • The vend can be registered as “zero value” during the process
  • The emergency credit should then be automatically topped up to €100

Once you have done this, there will be additional emergency credit of €100 on the meter.

This will allow gas to continue to flow for a longer period of time that usual, if you cannot top up.
